Orthodontics for Children

It’s best for the orthodontist to see children by age 7 to advise if orthodontic treatment might be required and to get an opinion as to the best time for a youngster to be treated. The first permanent molars and incisors have usually come in by that time and crossbites, crowding, and other problems can be evaluated. When treatment is started early, the orthodontist can guide the growth of the jaw and guide incoming permanent teeth. Early treatment can also regulate the width of the upper and lower dental arches, maintain space for permanent teeth, avoid the need for permanent tooth extractions, reduce likelihood of impacted permanent teeth, correct thumb-sucking, and eliminate abnormal swallowing or speech problems. In other words, early treatment may simplify later treatment in some instances.

The most common time for orthodontic treatment to begin is for pre-teens. Typically, guys are about 12 and girls near 11, dependent upon their individual needs, growth pattern, and dental development. We provide a complimentary evaluation to determine needs and timing of treatment, often continuing to simply follow the growth of patients until the prime time for their specific treatment to begin. Kalamazoo Orthodontics features our own signature Butterfly System braces and we were just one of four offices in the U.S. selected to be part of the Invisalign® Teen Investigative Research Team.

Orthodontics for Adults

Braces aren’t just for kids anymore. Tooth alignment can be changed at any age if your gums and bone structure are healthy. We offer a variety of treatments that are designed for different age groups – including adults. A new smile can begin today.

Orthodontic treatment at later stages in life can dramatically improve your personal appearance and self-esteem. Improving the health of your teeth and gums is equally important. Crooked teeth and a bad bite can contribute to gum and bone loss, tooth decay, and abnormal wear of the tooth enamel and surfaces, headaches and jaw joint (TMJ/TMD) pain.

Good news! The new techniques and appliances we use greatly reduce discomfort levels, decrease the frequency of visits, shorten treatment time and may allow you to choose from several options. Your options may include metal braces, translucent braces or transparent aligners (Invisalign) that can to improve misaligned teeth. During the initial examination, we will be able to determine the best possible treatment for your individual needs. During this initial examination, we can outline the treatment plan, time of treatment expected and the approximate cost.

A large percentage of our patients are adults, and they agree that it’s never too late to improve their greatest asset – their smile.

Orthodontic treatment can be successful at any age and adults especially appreciate the benefits of a beautiful smile. One of every five patients in orthodontic treatment is over 21 and we have had patients in their 80’s wearing braces or Invisalign. The appearance of braces for adults is quite an acceptable appearance today especially with the smaller and more esthetic brackets like our own Butterfly System® and clear crystalline Radiance braces. In addition, we also feature the Invisalign® and other clear aligner systems of “braceless treatment.” Occasionally some type of surgery might be required for adult orthodontic patients because their jaws are not growing. Adults also may have experienced some breakdown or loss of their teeth and bone that supports the teeth and may require periodontal treatment before, during, and/or after orthodontic treatment. Bone loss can also limit the amount and direction of tooth movement that is advisable. The advents of temporary anchorage devices (TADS or miniscrews), Insignia™ Custom-designed braces, and Propel “accelerated orthodontics” techniques and OrthoAccel’s AcceleDent techniques, however, have enhanced treatment options for adults. Kalamazoo Orthodontics are pioneers in all of these aspects in the specialty of orthodontics.
