The purpose of your first visit to our office is to get acquainted with Dr. Bowman, our staff and our office. Dr. Bowman will conduct a thorough examination and discuss existing problems as well as what treatment options are available to correct them. If treatment is necessary, we will schedule an appointment for orthodontic records to be taken to help us with accurate and efficient treatment planning.
Treatment Planning Consultation
Once Dr. Bowman has thoroughly reviewed your records, we will meet with you to go over treatment options and your customized treatment plan in detail. We will also discuss the cost of treatment and payment options available. We encourage you to ask questions during this appointment because we believe patient education is vital in the overall success of your treatment.
The appointment where you receive your appliances (expanders, braces, Invisalign®, etc.) will take between one and two hours. Then, every four to eight weeks, you’ll have adjustment appointments that take between 10 and 40 minutes.
We see patients by appointment only. We value your time and strive to keep our schedule on track. We ask that you extend the same courtesy to us by arriving on time for your appointment and informing us if you are unable to make your scheduled appointment.
Typical Emergencies and How To Solve Them
Loose or Poking Archwires
Sometimes discomfort caused by a wire on your braces can be resolved by moving the wire away from the irritated area with a cotton swab or eraser. If the wire will not move, try covering the end of it with a small piece of cotton or a small amount of wax. If the wire is painful, you can cut it with nail clippers or scissors that have been washed and sterilized in alcohol. If you cannot resolve the wire irritation, call our office for an appointment.
Loose Brackets and or Bands
Call our office immediately for advice if a bracket or wire is loosened. The bracket may need to be re-fitted as soon as possible. You may have a situation that requires cutting a wire or sliding a bracket off a wire at night or over the weekend. If you need to cut a wire in case of emergency, you may use fingernail clippers that have been washed and sterilized in alcohol. Please call our office the next business day, so that we may schedule an appointment for you.
Most patients lose a separator during their treatment. Do not worry about losing a separator, but call our office to see if it needs to be replaced.
If You Swallow Something
If you swallow a piece of your appliance, stay calm. Usually, when this happens it will easily pass through the digestive system and out of your body in a bowel movement; however, if you experience difficulty breathing, please contact immediate medical attention. Also, contact our office to schedule a replacement appointment. If you already have an appointment, please contact us still so we can ensure we reserve enough time to make the replacement.
Call us and make an appointment if your retainer breaks. Do not continue to wear the appliance if it is broken. Bring all pieces of your retainer to your appointment with you.
Discomfort with Orthodontic Treatment
During the first week after your braces are in place and routine adjustments are complete, you will likely feel some pain, soreness or discomfort. You may take acetaminophen or other non-aspirin pain relievers while you adjust to your new braces. A warm wash cloth or heating pad may reduce the soreness in your jaws.

The cost of treatment depends on the complexity of the patient’s problem and the type of braces used. We will discuss fees and payment options before we begin treatment. We have several payment options to suit different budgeting needs, including a 0-down payment option. We work hard to make your orthodontic treatment as affordable as possible.
Our financial team will work with you to ensure you receive your maximum insurance benefits. We recommend you contact your insurance provider prior to treatment to understand how much will be covered.
