Class III Solutions

Class III malocclusions are often some of the most difficult treatment scenarios in orthodontics. These types of bites typically feature over-development of the lower jaw, underdevelopment of the upper jaw, or some combination. A prognathic lower jaw and an underbite (or crossbite of front teeth) are common characteristics of a Class III bite.

Kalamazoo Orthodontics and Dr. Bowman have been involved in the introduction of several innovative methods for the correction of different types of Class III bites. This includes the invention of the Quick Fix device, the description of a fixed reverse labial bow, and the miniscrew-anchored Hybrid RPE. In addition, Dr. Bowman has also published a method of miniscrew-supported correction for mild Class IIIs, has begun work with miniplate orthognathics, and also the enhancement of these methods with "accelerated orthodontics," using the AlveoLogic Propel device to stimulate tooth movement using the Regional Acceleratory Phenomenon that accompanies bone healing. In addition, we are the first private U.S. practice to offer OrthoAccel's AcceleDent to stimulate tooth movement through vibration.

THE QUICK FIX

The Journal of Clinical Orthodontics featured "A Quick Fix for Pseudo-Class III Correction" as an opening article. This piece features Dr. Bowman's invention, the QuickFix (from American Orthodontics, Inc.). This device was created to provide a more comfortable, predictable, and rapid resolution of anterior crossbites that accompany Pseudo-Class III malocclusions. Dr. Bowman designed both the QuickFix appliance and the Side Swipe auxiliary tube. The combination of these devices (used with six orthodontic braces), typically resolves mixed dentition anterior crossbites in 6-9 months.

Success with the QuickFix is not dependent upon patient compliance and this mechanism can be easily combined with other appliances (e.g., quad helix, reverse facemask or labial bow) as needed. Dr. Bowman was influenced by a series of research studies from the faculty at the University of Hong Kong in creating this device. Workers there demonstrated 100% successful resolution of anterior crossbites in a sample of 25 consecutively treated Pseudo-Class III patients. Subsequently, Dr. Bowman had the opportunity to present his appliance concepts at the Prince Philip Dental Hospital, University of Hong Kong in 2006, as well as introducing these devices at the American Association of Orthodontists Annual Sessions in both 2005 and 2007. Dr. Bowman has had articles on the Quick Fix published in Canadian Oral Health, OrthoTribune, and the Journal of the Asian Pacific Orthodontic Society. In 2011, Drs. Bowman and Moskowitz collaborated on an article for Orthodontic Practice US on the Quick Fix. Dr. Bowman has also collaborated with professors from Mansoura University, Egypt in reporting on a sample of patients treated with the Quick Fix that is currently in press.

REVERSE LABIAL BOW

"A Fixed Reverse Labial Bow for Moderate Class III Interceptive Treatment," by Dr's. Carano, Valle, and Bowman, was published in the Journal of Clinical Orthodontics as another alternative for early correction of Class III bites.

MINISCREW HYBRID RPE ADVANCER

A collaboration by Dr's. Ludwig, Glasl, Bowman, Drescher, and Wilmes resulted in the publication of "Miniscrew-supported Class III Treatment with the Hybrid RPE Advancer," also appearing in the Journal of Clinical Orthodontics. This article describes the treatment of more complex Class III bites using miniscrew anchorage support.
